Do you want to know the best things to do in Yogyakarta? Then continue reading below!
Yogyakarta is an amazing city that has a lot to offer its visitors. It is not only the heart of the Javanese culture but also a place where you can spot some of the world’s most beautiful Buddhist and Hindu temples. Except for incredible temples, the city also offers other beautiful places for those who love to be out in the beautiful nature and also a whole bunch of locations for food and shopping!
Here is the list of the best 5 things to do in Yogyakarta!
Visit Borobudur – The world’s biggest Buddhist temple
Technically, Borobudur is not located in Yogyakarta. But despite that, it is still one of the greatest attractions to visit while visiting the city. Borobudur is one of the largest Buddhist temples and today it is also on the world heritage list. The temple consists of six platforms that are stacked on each other and are decorated with 2672 reliefs and 504 statues of Buddha. If you have the time and money to go and see the sunrise at the temple, you should, because it is magical. These morning tours can be quite expensive, and if you can’t afford it, then I suggest to be one of the first persons at the temple when they open the gates 08.00 in the morning.
A visit to Borobudur is undoubtedly one of the best things to do in Yogyakarta, and it is a must when visiting the city!
Hike up the volcano Merapi
Merapi is Indonesia’s most active volcano and lies north of Yogyakarta. Merapi receives (in average) an eruption every 5-10 year, and is feared for its deadly flows of lava, smoke, and avalanches of hot-red stones. The name of Merapi comes from the old Javanese, and means “the one who make fire.”
Merapi volcano is a popular spot for those who like to hike. If you are in good shape and health, it will take about three hours to climb the volcano. It may not sound like a long time, but the way up is much more challenging than you think. Most people climb the volcano at about three o’clock, to avoid the hottest hours and to get the chance to see the sunset. But, if you decide to hike this time of the day, then you have to be quick as you don’t want to climb back down in the dark.
Go on an adventure in the Kalibiru National Park – One of my favorite things to do in Yogyakarta!

About an hour with a car from central Yogyakarta lies one of the most beautiful Hindu temples in Indonesia. The Prambanan Temple is also known as “Rara Jonggrang Temple” and is characterized by its high and pointy architecture. Something that should not be missed when visiting this temple is to see the sunset, which is incredibly beautiful!
