Ceramics

Chinese ceramics is a classic souvenir to buy when traveling in China. Ceramics have been used by the locals for thousands of years, both for its functionality but also as decorative objects in the Chinese homes.

Hand-painted pottery, tiles, and other Chinese ceramics make perfect gifts for yourself or someone you love.

Chinese ceramics are available in all different kinds of colors and patterns, which is usually subjected to the area they’ve been made in. There are many areas in China that produce pottery, and in big cities like Shanghai, it’s possible to buy them all.

Blue Nankeen

Blue nankeen is a style of Chinese fabric that originated on the Silk Road in Shanghai, around 3000 years ago. Blue nankeen is made of cotton with two-toned hand-printed designs. From this fabric, they make both clothing and household linens such as tablecloths, drapes, and bed linen etc.

At the Chinese Printed Blue Nankeen Exhibition Hall, you can view this ancient art and see how the fabrics are made. Here you can also purchase blue nankeen objects such as dresses, shirts, tablecloths, skirts, and tapestries.

Moon Cake – One of my favorite China souvenirs!

One of my favorite things to do while in China is to eat mooncakes. I know, they’re full of calories but when traveling you simply have to try some local snacks and sweets.

Mooncakes are round pastries with a thick filling made from red bean or lotus seed paste. They can be bought all year round in certain shops, but almost everywhere during the Mid-Autumn Festival – one of the most important festivals in China.

If you wonder what to buy in China for a family member or friend, then this is one of the best China souvenirs to buy.

Chinese fan

Chinese fans were used as an accessory by females during the imperial area, but today they’re used by both locals and tourists. This is one of the most popular China souvenirs among tourists since they’re useful and make a nice souvenir.

The prices vary depending on what kind of material you want. They start from around 2-3 USD and can go up to hundreds if you want to buy a really fancy one. The most common ones are made of silk or paper and have patterns of nature and animals.

Silk

One of the most popular china souvenirs is silk products. You can buy everything from good-quality silk clothing and pillowcases to accessories in the various silk shops in China.

Chinese silk clothing can be a bit expensive, but smaller products and accessories are more affordable and are great to buy as souvenirs!

Chinese Art / Calligraphy

A piece of Chinese art or calligraphy are souvenirs that you can buy in every other store and market in China. The art and calligraphy vary in price depending on what you want. There is everything from cheap art prints to authentic paintings made by famous artists.

There are many beautiful pieces, both cheap and expensive, it’s just all about what you prefer and how much money you want to spend on it.

Jade

All over China, you’ll find both jewelry and decorative items made out of the beautiful green stone Jade. In old Chinese culture, Jade was associated with power and nobility.

If you want to buy something small to bring back home, then I can recommend buying a beautiful necklace or ring made of Jade.

Just be careful where you buy jade products in China since there are many fake ones out on the market. In the northwestern part of China they make most products of Jade, so there it might be easier to find the real deal.

Chinese tea

If you want to buy a traditional Chinese souvenir, then I can recommend buying some Chinese tea.

Tea is a big part of the Chinese culture and the Chinese people’s lives. The locals do not only drink tea at night or when feeling cold, but they also drink tea when eating their food. According to many locals, drinking tea with or after your meal is an aid to faster digestion.

A couple of years ago I would have thought that it would be crazy to drink hot tea to a meal, but after having a traditional Chinese dinner with some local friends, I must say that I really liked drinking hot tea to the food.

However, even though you buy tea in China, you don’t have to drink it when eating dinner back home. It’s just as good to drink during breakfast or at night before going to bed.

Chinese tea set

If you already have delicious Chinese tea at home, or if you simply want to go big when souvenir shopping in China, then I can recommend buying a Chinese tea set.

All over China, you can buy beautiful tea sets to bring back home, in all different colors and patterns.

Their way of making and drinking tea is a bit different than in the western world, and that’s why this makes such a great souvenir. The Chinese tea cups are low, shallow and wide, and the clay teapots are created to make the tea taste better.

Tea is a form of art in China, and that’s why a Chinese tea set with local tea makes such a great gift to yourself or someone you love.

Chopsticks – One of the most popular China souvenirs!

If you’re like me and think its fun and enjoy eating with chopsticks, then this is the perfect souvenir for you. Chopsticks can be very affordable in China, but also very expensive depending on the material, and if they’re handmade or not. They come in all different kinds of materials, colors, and patterns.

If you enjoy eating with chopsticks and want to learn how to use them better, then a pair of chopsticks is a must to bring back home for some practice. Remember: practice makes perfect!
