Vienna is one of Europes most visited cities and is famous for its rich history, beautiful architecture, and delicious Sachertorte. The capital of Austria is located next to the beautiful Danube River and has a special place in my heart.

If you’re traveling to Vienna, but not sure what to do and see during your stay – then this is the perfect article for you!

Here’s the list of the top 10 things to do in Vienna:

Drink Viennese Vino

Did you know that Vienna is one of the largest wine-growing capital cities in the world? Yes, it’s true with its seven square kilometer vineyards. The biggest vineyard area lies in the districts of 16-19, but the ones of highest quality lie over the Danube river in the 21st district.

Sit at one of the many outdoor seatings in Vienna and sip on a glass of delicious local wine while watching the lively crowd passing by.

Another great tip is to visit a Heuriger, which is a rustic wine tavern that lies among the vineyards. A visit to a Heuriger is seriously one of the best things to do in Vienna since it’s such a delicious and beautiful experience.

Visit the Naschmarkt Market

Vienna’s largest open-air market is open every day of the week except on Sundays. Come here and check out all the stalls selling everything from food and wine to antiques and nick-nacks.

Come here early in the morning on a Saturday to make the best bargain, and to see all the locals in action!

 Visit St. Stephen’s Cathedral

When wandering around Vienna, one can’t miss the huge and beautiful Stephansdom. This Gothic cathedral lies in the heart of Vienna and stretches 136 meters up in the sky with its colorful roof tiles.

If you’re in shape, I can highly recommend you to climb the 343 steps to the top of the tower. The climb can be a little exhausting, but it’s well worth it when you get to see the view (and also to burn off some calories after eating several cakes haha). Up in the tower you’re not only getting a panoramic view of the city but a more close-up of the beautiful roof with its colorful mosaics.

See Vienna City Hall

Vienna City Hall (Rathaus) is an impressive Neo-Gothic building that was completed in 1883. This building is enormous and is famous for its 98-meter high tower.

I recommend taking a guided tour since there’s much to see inside the City Hall’s walls, including the Schmidt Halle, Heraldic Rooms, the City Senate Chamber and the Mayor’s reception room.

Check out the beautiful palaces

There’s no question about it, Vienna offers amazing architecture. When you’re in Vienna, you have to visit either Schonbrunn, Belvedere or Hofburg Palace – or all of them if you have time.

All palaces are beautiful and well worth a visit to take some excellent photographs, to take a relaxing stroll in the gardens, or just to admire the beautiful architecture.

If you’re interested in history and architecture, then you have to visit one of the palaces since it’s one of the best things to do in Vienna.

Listen to music at the State Opera House

Vienna is world known for its operas and classical music. If you enjoy listening to classic music, or just want to try something new, then I highly recommend you to go to a concert at the beautiful State Opera House in central Vienna. Here you can listen to Opera and see ballet shows 300 days per year.

During April, May, June and September they display the shows on a large screen outside the Opera House, which means that you can enjoy the show for free!

Hit the beach

A beach isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of Vienna. But, the banks of Danube makes a perfect spot for hot and sunny days in the capital.

There are a couple of spots along the river that are suitable for couples, families, and youngsters. But, make sure to check beforehand so you don’t walk in on a nudist area – that might not be so appropriate if you’re traveling with your family/kids.

Visit Karlskirche

Karlskirche is a beautiful and photogenic church in Vienna, that’s a must to visit for all photographers. This church was built 1737 and is today one of Vienna’s most famous Baroque religious buildings.

See Hundertwasserhaus

Hundertwasserhaus is famous for being Vienna’s nature and human-friendly house. This place is well worth a visit when you’re in Vienna to check out the cool and creative architecture.

The brightly colored landmark is located on the corner of Löwengasse and Kegelstrasse! Make sure not to miss it during your stay, since it’s one of the top things to do in Vienna!

Visit some of Vienna’s most famous coffee houses

One of the best things to do in Vienna (in my opinion hehe) is to visit some of the famous coffee houses in town. Vienna offers some great cafés where you can grab a cup of coffee and eat some delicious desserts including the famous Chocolate Sachertorte and Apfelstrudel with Vanilla Sauce.
