When we visited Malta this year, we decided to travel to Gozo and stay at Downtown Hotel in Victoria. This hotel is a budget hotel and offers simple accommodation and breakfast at a fair price. Downtown Hotel had a good location close to both bus stops, supermarkets, a shopping mall and some local restaurants.
Alex and I had a great stay at this hotel, and down below you can read more about it.
Here’s my review of Downtown Hotel Gozo:

Room Standard (Economy Room)
When we stayed at this hotel in January this year, we booked an economy room, which is the cheapest room at this hotel. We booked the cheapest room since we were not going to spend much time there.
This was indeed a budget room, but it was still quite nice with comfortable beds, a clean bathroom, air-conditioning, mini-bar, and TV. There was no luxury what so ever, but if you’re going to explore Gozo all day long, you don’t need all that.
We thought that we got good value for our money and we really don’t have any complaints about this place.
This is what you get when booking an economy room:
- Comfortable bed
- Comfortable Pillows
- Free WiFi in the room
- Hair dryer
- Safe
- Desk
- Air-conditioning
- Daily cleaning
- Mini-bar
- TV – International and Maltese channels
Breakfast
We visited Gozo during low season (winter), and we think that the options of food were less than usual. Since we’ve seen reviews and pictures from the breakfast from other travelers online, we were a bit disappointed – but since we stayed at a budget hotel, you can’t really complain.
What to choose from the breakfast buffet:
- Scrambled eggs
- Beans in tomato sauce
- Sausages
- Omelette
- Bread
- Cold cuts (limited selection)
- Bacon
- Tomatoes
- Croissants/pan au chocolate
- Yoghurt
- Butter and jam/jelly
- Cereals
- Fruit (banana, orange, and apples)
- Tea
- Coffee
I liked the scrambled eggs, and the bread was also quite good. As I mentioned before, hopefully, the breakfast is better during high season!
Staff
When we arrived at the hotel, we were greeted by a friendly smile from the woman in the reception. Check-in went fast, and we got the help that we needed. She let us know when and where the breakfast was and said that we could ask her if we had any questions.
Every morning she smiled at us and said good morning, which was a nice start of the day. We also had some problem finding the remote to the A/C, and she immediately came up to our room and helped us. I must say that the service was excellent at this hotel!
WiFi
Since Gozo is a small Island, and in fact that the weather was kind of stormy when we were there, we didn’t have too high expectations of having good WiFi. Since we work from our computers while traveling the WiFi is very important to us. We were pleasantly surprised by how good it worked. However, you couldn’t access your e-mail since the hotels ISP was blocking the port server.
Outside the room
Downtown Hotel Gozo isn’t a huge hotel, so don’t expect much. Here they have an outdoor pool and a playground for kids. Down by the reception they have a café with outdoor seating.
Location
Downtown Hotel Gozo is located in central Victoria near supermarkets, a shopping mall, and local restaurants. Just a short walk from the hotel lies several bus stops that take you to different locations around the island.
Summary of my stay at Downtown Hotel Gozo
Overall, Alex and I had a good stay at Downtown Hotel Gozo. We stayed there for three nights, and we think that the hotel is worth your money while exploring Gozo. You’re close to bus stops, food stores, restaurants and a shopping mall. A great plus was the friendly receptionist and the A/C during the cold days on Gozo. The breakfast was ok for the price we paid, and the only downside was that we couldn’t access our emails.
If you’re looking for a budget hotel that gives value for your money while staying in Gozo, then I can recommend Downtown Hotel Gozo.
